About Us

Our Mission: We are Indigenous Rising. We are the Original Nations of the Americas. We are Indigenous athletes, coaching staff, officials and volunteers. The mission and purpose of Indigenous Rising Roller Derby is to unite the Indigenous roller derby community, representing the proud, once-borderless communities in our Ancestral Lands on these continents. Our Ancestral Home is known by many names: Turtle Island, Abya Yala, Pachamama, and thousands more. We are committed to strengthening the sport of flat track roller derby, the athletes who play it, and the Indigenous peoples throughout the hemisphere by representing First Nations people in tournaments around the world.

Founded in 2017, Indigenous Rising is currently composed of skaters from more than 30 distinct sovereign nation states. These Indigenous nations our peoples now occupy are vastly reshaped after centuries of forced removal and relocation. We are all on stolen Indigenous land. We formed this team to unite in our shared experiences as Indigenous peoples and roller derby players in a landscape where we are often forgotten. We use our platform to show other athletes and community members what is possible for Indigenous sports across tribes, borders and nations.

We continue to realize this vision by further growing and inspiring others to claim their space in the roller derby community and we've formed some incredible partnerships and powerful friendships along the way, including other borderless roller derby teams including Jewish Roller Derby, Black Diaspora Roller Derby, Fuego Latino Roller Derby, and more.

Indigenous Rising Roller Derby is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, tax ID 93-1979104.
